The Objective: Reposition the City's Public Art Initiative
Rework the city of Austin’s public art initiative. Take into account the location-based nature of the featured artwork. Call to technology, wayfinding and locality.
First, it was necessary to simplify the rather long "City of Austin Public Arts Initiative" to something that had a bit more personality. Arts Publica was chosen because it has associations with the communal movements of the local and national Latino community. The brand should reference this sense of inclusion and an energetic, youthful spirit.
Art for All
Common places shape our lives. Our hopes and dreams; our desires and our great moments of loss. We are a thousand visionary lights that sing out in one unified voice. We provide a platform for the unique voices that make Austin such a uniquely relevant place in the complex, connected world we live in.
At Public Art Austin, we stand in the name of art for all. We believe in community through the open exchange of ideas. We create opportunities for local and international artists to share their unique perspectives. We believe that art should be for everyone.
The mark and logo symbolize both viewing (as an eye) and wayfinding (as a destination point). There is an unpretentious sense of play here.
In Situ large-scale environmental graphics, along with stickers and balloons spread around the city, reinforce the notion of public space as art gallery.
The cumulative effect of ad placements, exhibition locations and engagement with the Arts Publica brand is that the line between the experience of traversing through the city and appreciating artwork is blurred.
The site features a calendar of events and showings. Additional information about exhibits and artists also live here. It is the face of the initiative. It also drives traffic towards the app.
The app serves as a virtual tour guide. Users can easily see all exhibitions in relation to their current location, or plan a day around seeing multiple exhibitions. It also sends them a push notification when they are near a point of interest.
Additional audio, video and text content is available for exhibitions on show.
